How long will the furniture last?
Teak furniture is made of one of nature’s most durable renewable building materials. Teak has been used for centuries for building construction, shipbuilding and furniture construction. Teak furniture has withstood the test of time in public areas around England with many pieces still in use after 100 years. Your furniture will also give decades of service without requiring the constant care that some other types of outdoor furniture demand.
Teak is beautiful!
How is the wood finished?
Domus Designs offers the full line of furniture in natural teak finish. Natural teak will gradually change to a beautiful silver gray patina with exposure to the elements. Alternately, we offer a teak protector with UV and mildew resistant agents that will prolong the honey gold color of natural teak. This type of protectant will not darken like oil. For additional information, see our Care of Teak section.
Does the production of teak furniture hurt the environment?
Unlike metal or plastic, teakwood is a renewable resource. Teak furniture’s ability to last for decades even centuries makes it environmentally friendly in comparison to other man made furnishings that eventually end up in a landfill. We use only teak from plantations in Indonesia that are supervised by a division of the state forest ministry. This ensures that the resource is managed in a sustainable manner and the forests of Indonesia are preserved for future generations. It is interesting to note that as a result of the efforts of the Indonesian Government, more teak is growing today than 100 years ago.
What about the quality?
Teakwood is commercially available from the Indonesian Government in several grades. The best furniture quality grade is "Mutu Pertama" or "First Quality" which means that the lumber is taken from the best part of the log with tight grain and no loose knots or checks. Furniture from Domus Designs uses "First Quality" teak exclusively. All lumber is kiln dried before manufacturing and assembly. Our furniture is precision machine cut from heavy timbers and uses the time proven mortise and tenon or tongue and groove joinery methods. Structural joints are doweled and glued with waterproof polyurethane furniture glue for a lifetime of vigorous outdoor use. Fasteners and metal fittings are all made to our specifications of heavy solid brass and stainless steel materials. For more information please see our Quality section.
Does the furniture require assembly?
To reduce shipping and storage cost, most furniture is shipped “Knocked Down” or KD. Depending on the model, a few pieces are shipped fully assembled and require no further assembly. Tables and most benches and chairs are shipped knock down. All Domus Designs KD furniture is pre-assembled in the factory and then disassembled for packing. All items can be assembled in less than an 30 minutes without any special skills, using the included tools or household tools. Please see our Assembly section for more details.
What kind of guarantee do you offer?
Domus Designs teak furniture products are guaranteed against defects in materials and workmanship for a period of five years from the date of delivery to the end user. Upholstery products sold by Domus Designs such as cushions and umbrella covers carry a guarantee of one year from the date of delivery. Please see our Warranty section for more information.
How long does it take for shipping?
It will typically take 5-7 business days for orders shipped by UPS. Shipment by common carrier averages 5 to 10 business days to arrive depending on distance and shipping frequency to your area. Please see Delivery.
How much does it cost to ship the furniture?
To keep our prices low we calculate the shipping cost separately from the price of our products. This allows us to charge shipping at actual cost rather than a cushioned average. We will calculate and inform you of the exact cost when you place an order with us. Shipping costs have several factors such as weight, volume and distance. Grouping more items in a single shipment can help to reduce the average shipping cost.
